On August 22, 2022, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) submitted a request to FIFA to maintain the existing qualifying format for the 2026 World Cup. This format, used since 1998, involves a round-robin tournament among all 10 CONMEBOL member associations.
Qualified Teams and Play-Off Details
The top four teams from the CONMEBOL qualifiers will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup. The fifth-placed team will advance to an intercontinental play-off against a team from another confederation for an additional berth.
Current Standings
The 2023-25 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers are underway, with the first four rounds of fixtures scheduled for September and October 2023.
