ALS: A Devastating Disease

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a fatal neurological disorder that affects the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. These neurons are responsible for sending signals from the brain to the muscles, allowing for movement.

Symptoms and Prognosis

ALS typically begins with weakness and stiffness in the limbs, hands, or feet. As the disease progresses, these symptoms worsen and can spread to other parts of the body. Eventually, patients may lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, and breathe on their own.

There is currently no cure for ALS, and the prognosis is poor. Most patients die within three to five years of diagnosis.
