India 2024 Election

2024 Indian General Elections

Overview

The 2024 Indian General Elections were held over seven phases from April 19 to June 1, 2024. The elections were to elect all 543 members of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. Votes were counted on June 5, 2024.

Results

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the most seats in the elections, but fell short of a majority. The BJP won 282 seats, down from 303 in the previous election. The Indian National Congress (INC) won 193 seats, up from 52 in the previous election.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 40 seats, up from 4 in the previous election. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won 35 seats, up from 22 in the previous election.

Analysis

The BJP's victory was seen as a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Modi's leadership. However, the party's failure to win a majority was seen as a setback for Modi and could make it more difficult for him to pass legislation in the coming years.

The INC's strong performance was seen as a sign of the party's revival under Rahul Gandhi. The AAP's continued growth was seen as a sign of the growing popularity of the party's anti-corruption message.

The 2024 Indian General Elections were a closely fought contest that resulted in a hung Parliament. The BJP's victory was a significant achievement, but the party's failure to win a majority could make it difficult for Modi to govern.
